I've tried Michelin Macadams and they grip ok. Their main plus point is longevity but they still offer enough stickiness for knee-down stuff.
pirelli Dragons are also a good choice (put a Dragon Corsa on the front - the softer compound gives you better grip where you need it). Lovely tires that don't last as long as the Macadams but make up for it with lotsa grip.
Want even more grip mid-corner? You'll be wanting the Dunlop 207s then. They have a slightly triangular profile which makes the bike turn into corners faster but offer un-matched grip once in it. I've found that these aren't the most stable in a straight line though.
My RF900 currently has Metzeler MEZ3s fitted which give a bit more grip still, but retain a lovely neutral, predictable feel. These are pretty good in the wet too. My favourites are these and the Pirelli Dragons - so far.
I've tried both a 180 and the recommended 170 fitment for the rear and the difference is noticable. A 180 section might look better but it slows the steering down a bit. Not worth it when you're trying to keep up with a well-ridden 600 on twisty roads.
